Mina
The Night CleanerMina is AJ’s sister, Phillip’s soulmate, and a forceful presence among the Hero Society’s friends and allies. Her story moves between two kinds of reunion: Phillip’s long-delayed effort to bring her and AJ together, and the later embrace that follows time reversal, when she returns to Phillip without remembering the lost months. Outspoken in private and active in the city’s crisis, she becomes central to the future Phillip has tried to guide—and, ultimately, to the family they build together.
Identity and Introduction
Mina first appears in the shared life of the Hero Society as a familiar presence at breakfast. When she asks Esme about extra syrup, Esme sees her as adorable but feisty. The domestic scene establishes a side of Mina that continues to define her: direct, comfortable among the group, and uninclined to make herself smaller for the sake of politeness.
Her frankness soon becomes unmistakable. During a conversation Rose steers toward the group’s hidden romantic business, Mina announces that she is sleeping with Phillip, then continues eating as though she has said nothing remarkable. Lilith celebrates the disclosure, and the room responds with laughter. Mina’s manner turns the revelation into a public fact on her own terms; rather than waiting for Phillip to explain the relationship, she claims the moment herself.
Phillip and the Foreseen Relationship
Mina’s bond with Phillip is not simply a romance that begins when the two discover their attraction. Mina explains that Phillip had arranged events to unfold as they did. He found AJ, but understood that AJ needed time to grow into himself and that Mina needed time to search for her brother. Phillip knew Mina was his soulmate and believed that helping AJ would also bring him closer to the woman he was destined to love.
The arrangement carries a cost for both of them. Mina was angry at first because Phillip could have reunited her with AJ sooner. She came around quickly, but her initial resentment matters: his foreknowledge did not make the delay painless or give him permission to bypass her feelings. Esme recognizes that Phillip must choose a path that preserves the best possible future, even when it means keeping away from the woman he already knows as the girl of his dreams. Mina, for her part, is presented as more than a destination in his visions; her reaction to his choices gives the relationship friction as well as certainty.
The pair’s contrast is part of their appeal. Esme imagines Mina as queen to Phillip’s king of the city, someone who will keep him on his toes even though he can see the future. In a conversation about stopping ocean pollution, Mina’s practical energy appears again: Esme imagines her turning Phillip into a weapon for causes such as ending world hunger or saving kittens. The exchange links their intimacy to a wider sense of purpose without making Mina’s influence merely ceremonial.
Life Among Friends and Public Crisis
Mina’s relationships also place her within a lively group life. At the breakfast gathering, Rose and Phillip’s closeness reminds Esme of her own twin bond with Eli. Mina is beside Esme when the family resemblance prompts that memory, and her disclosure makes the group’s teasing and congratulations part of the couple’s shared social world. Later, Mina sits with Rose while Rose jogs, eating pretzels from a bag; when Draco and Rose are teased about marriage, Mina joins the congratulations, calling their wedding one of what she expects will be many Hero Society weddings.
That ease with others does not keep Mina on the sidelines when Seahill faces danger. During the city’s unrest, she and AJ are battling the work of Dorian’s team. Their efforts are reported to be getting ahead, with the electrical grid expected to return within half an hour. The detail makes Mina’s contribution concrete: amid evacuation plans, police work, and political departures, she is part of the effort to restore essential infrastructure. The account does not specify her abilities or the precise method she uses, but it places her alongside AJ in active resistance to Dorian’s operation.
Time Reversal, Reunion, and Family
After time is reversed, Mina and AJ do not remember the months lost in the change. Phillip nevertheless knows where to find AJ and tells him where to find Mina, aware that his sister will want to meet the man who brought them together. When the two approach, Mina initially wears a bored expression; seeing Phillip changes it. She leaps into his arms without exchanging a word, and he catches her, expecting the movement and returning the embrace.
The reunion is emotionally double-edged. Mina’s immediate reason for embracing Phillip is that she has her brother back, not that she remembers their former relationship. Phillip understands this and intends to make her fall in love with him again. The moment therefore restarts their romance rather than restoring it through memory: the bond he knows from the prior course of events must be made anew in a life Mina can experience for herself.
The later account of their life together gives that promise a future. Phillip describes a large wedding, saying Mina deserved whatever she wanted, and presents them as a match who continue to surprise one another despite his knowledge of possible futures. They have a daughter. In one domestic scene, Mina sleeps on a couch with the child in her arms; both wear matching unicorn onesies after waiting up for Phillip while he is away trying to save a building full of people from a fire. He calls them his girls and the reason he fought and suffered. Mina’s arc thus closes not with foreknowledge fulfilled automatically, but with family life built after a second meeting—and with her continuing to be the person who can surprise the man who thought he had already seen what would come.
